Troop 437 will be walking along the Battle Road followed taken by the British on their attack of Revolutionary fighters on April 17, 1775, and on along which they retreated later that same day. Along the path, the Scouts will see a number of historic buildings. We hope to have a special guest and local historical expert join us on the trip to serve as our tour guide.
We will meet on the Lexington Green at 9AM and walk the 7.5 miles to the Old North Bridge in Concord. The trail is clear, well marked and relatively easy. Parents, if ever you’ve wanted to join you scout on one of our outings without having to commit to spending the night sleeping in a tent, this is an excellent chance to do so.
Scouts: This trip satisfies requirement 2A and possibly parts of 2D for the Eagle required merit badge Citizenship in the Nation…BUT ONLY IF YOU GET A BLUE CARD AHEAD OF TIME. See Mr McKeen if you need a blue card for this merit badge. Also, scouts working on 2nd Class rank, if you bring a compass you can complete requirement 3B: “Using a compass and map together take a 5 mile hike.”
FOOD Attendees should pack a bag lunch and bring water (at least 2 litres) for the trail we will stop to eat at some point along the way to eat. Additionally, the troop will provide some snacks for the trail.
Seasonally Appropriate Clothing Required: BE PREPARED! Although we will be walking the trail used for the Battle of Lexington and Concord on April 19, 1775, the weather is expected to me reminiscent of Valley Forge.
We have an exciting weekend hike opportunity coming up this December 4th weekend. We are making a reservation in one of the AMC huts in the White Mountains of NH, which means with just a minimal hiking effort we can appreciate the grandness of the great outdoors while enjoying the comfort of sleeping cots and a full kitchen!
“Located in Franconia Notch State Park, Lonesome Lake Hut, known affectionately as “Lonestar” for generations of guests, offers big mountain scenery without the big mountain effort. Experience spectacular views of the Franconia Ridge across a pristine glacial lake.”
While we will be packing in (and out) all of our food and necessities, the trail to the Lonestar Hut is just 1.6 miles in over well-traveled terrain. If you just want to enjoy the beauty and serenity of winter in the White Mountains without a lot of effort, this base hike is for you. For anyone who wants to get out and explore the wilderness directly, hiking options abound from the comfort of the lodge.
We do need to get our head-count in soon, so let’s get those hands up for Scouts who want in on this excellent adventure. Not sure if you’re ready, or whether or not hiking in December sounds like a good idea? Talk to some of the older Scouts who did this hike in 2018 and/or 2019 and let them tell you how much fun it was. I’d love to see a dozen eager Scouts from all the patrols joining us this year.
The Troop trip for December is a Boston City Trip on December 9th and 10th. This trip will feature sites selected by the PLC including The Old North Church and New England Aquarium. We will enjoy some great food in the North End and at Quincy Market. The day will be capped off with 2 hours at SkyZone Boston.
Please see the details in the attached permission slip. The SkyZone waiver form is also attached and must be completed prior to our arrival.
We have a short turn-around for this trip as sign-ups are due at the meeting this Thursday, 12\7.
If you cannot make it to the meeting but plan on attending the trip, you can also e-mail a copy of the forms to Mr. Barnard before the Thursday meeting.
